Kaity Etchison returns to the studio after a few years hiatus.

"Unconventional in approach, my work is a record of watery washes and calligraphic gesture - made with brush, wedge, knife and writing tools. Water pushed over rag paper lays organic, pre-determined yet surprising regions for pigment to settle into the terrain of cotton pulp. Interpreted lines of architecture and historical design are recurring components while both the imposition and constraint of the sea are muse and mainstay.

My abstract documentation is non technical, trained only by personal practice, prioritizing expressive preference over efficient production. Creation is slow.  My methods uphold in key pillars: A color pallet akin to places and representation of themes of great importance to me; intentionally restricted materials, some created in studio with foraged ingredients; and a focus on conveying empirical statements of belief, emotion and recollection.

What results is a soft, striking body of work. Finished offerings are understated in broader view and delicate, even intricate, upon close observation. Vivid granulation morphs into land and seascapes unto themselves. Irregular marks pull together the deconstructed components, as if signing a letter of things I wish to commemorate or leave behind

I offer the drawn out, melted down material of story that is private to me and chosen by collectors for bringing into one’s own space with new meaning."

Various styles of Kaity’s work can be found in the spaces of a few local hotels including the AC Hotel Greenville, Hotel Hartness, and the Grand Bohemian Lodge. She currently resides in Greenville with her husband and their children.
